Fear Eats the Soul (1974) and the crazy platform shoes!

Dear Followers!

I recently watched a certain German film in class called Fear Eats the Soul (1974), or in German Angst essen Seele auf. It's a terrific film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, from the New German Cinema era, and as it's from the 70s, the best thing about it (have a guess)... the clothes!

One aspect that stood out the most were the extremely high, bright yellow platform shoes that the heroine Emmi wears pretty much throughout the film. Unfortunately, I was unable to google a proper photo of them, but you can see them quite well in this one:

Emmi is the woman on the far left, and her shoes are g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s.
They're typical 70s, and here's a few more extreme examples of the styles that used to be everywhere:

I personally bought a pair of pretty platforms like these last summer from Peacocks. I'm still absolutely in love with them, and can't wait for the weather to get a little warmer so I can wear them again...

It's hard to predict where you could find 70s style platforms on the highstreet, as this is a trend that comes and goes... be on the look out for them, or alternatively have a scour through vintage style stores online to see what you can find! Try charity shops too, as you might bump into shoes actually from the era... now that would be something.

I know they look like they'd be hard to walk in, but they're actually the comfiest heeled shoes I own, so if you like the trend, I say GO FOR IT!

That's it for now, thanks for reading!

Love and piles of Louis Vuitton silk scarves,

Emma xx

ps. A quote from Fear Eats the Soul

Girl in bar: Well... are you coming?
Ali: No.
Girl in bar: And why not?
Ali: Cock broken.

Kubrick's 'Lolita' and the heart-shaped sunglasses

Dear Followers

Stanley Kubrick was one of my all-time favourite directors, and not just for the amazing films including the likes of 'A Clockwork Orange', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and '2001: A Space Odyssey'. I watched 'Lolita' a while back, and even though it is not one of my favourite Kubricks, it did leave something lingering at the back of my mind... that is, the heart-shaped sunglasses Lolita wears the first time that Professor Humbert sees her in the garden. They're very quirky and fun, and I am personally a huge fan of 60s fashion!

The following link will take you to the cxlondon.com (inexpensive) version of the glasses:

http://www.cxlondon.com/shop/prodDetail/838/44/Red-Heart-Shaped-Sunglasses

In case heart-shaped sunglasses aren't really your cup of tea, you can still take inspiration from it! Hearts are timeless and very cute + they go with anything. For example, you could try the following link to see a Topshop heart-shaped necklace:

http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&productId=1547151&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn=

Tights with little hearts on them are everywhere at the moment, but I've found ones a little more full-on, with bigger hearts so they stand out a lot more. From Miss Selfridge:

http://www.missselfridge.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=20555&storeId=12554&productId=1522296&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn=

Another way you could wear hearts is in the shape of a bag, such as this sweet Urban Outfitters version:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/Sequin-Heart-Box-Purse/invt/5770460253256

It's a little Christ-massy in the sense that it's sequined, but as it is black it won't look as if you're trying to prolong the holidays until April, but instead very stylish. I recommend black nail-polish with this bag, for an even more dramatic impact!

Then, lastly, my personal favourite: Vivienne Westwood heels. They are beautiful, and come in a range of colours for you to choose from (or get them all! You can never own too many pairs of shoes...). These are the pair on my wish-list:

That's it for now! Thank you for reading.

Please leave me feedback, let me know which heart-shaped goodness you went for!

Love and a 100 Chanel Quilted Chain Bags,

Emma x

ps. My heart shaped necklace from Claire's!

pps. As we have now covered some 60s style, I can safely say (in the words of Yves Saint Laurent): "Fashions fade, style is eternal".

The Big Sleep and Martha Vickers lustworthy polka-dot shorts!

Dear Followers

I would like to share my first significant fashion find in film, that inspired this entire blog! That is- Martha Vickers in the 1940s Film Noir, 'The Big Sleep'. In her character Carmen's first encounter with the film's male protagonist Marlow (played brilliantly by the ever-oh-so-charming Humphrey Bogart), she wears THE shorts: High-waisted, white, polka-dotted and utterly gorgeous. They may just be the most gorgeous shorts in the history of film!

40s style was very much in this winter, with the red hats, the fascinators and the pencil skirt suits- why not continue this trend right through spring with look-alikes of Martha's shorts? I know I will!

I have found several shorts on the high street that match Martha's criteria, but so far it looks as if Topshop is your best bet. Here are my links to three of the best ones in store at the moment:

1. http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=183990&parent_category_rn=74433&productId=1552791&langId=-1

2. http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=true&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=183990&parent_category_rn=74433&productId=1522024&langId=-1

3. http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=true&catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=183990&parent_category_rn=74433&productId=1490897&langId=-1

I have personally gone a little polka-dot crazy over the years... as these following photos can tell!

Basically a pile of all my polka dot clothing!

This high-waisted skirt is from Zara.

Even my umbrella is polka dotted!

I hope this post inspired you to get discovering those perfect shorts!

Love and plenty of Tiffany Diamonds,

ps. My favourite quote from 'The Big Sleep':

Carmen: What are you? A prizefighter?
Marlowe: No, I'm a shamus.
Carmen: What's a shamus?
Marlowe: It's a private detective.
Carmen: You're making fun of me.
Marlowe: Uh, uh.
Carmen: [she leans back and falls into his arms] You're cute.
Marlowe: [to the butler, Norris] You ought to wean her, she's old enough.
Hello, and welcome to Fashion and Film Fusion!

My name is Emma, and I'm currently studying in my second year for a degree in Film Studies at the University of Southampton, England.

As this is my first post, I should probably provide you with an introduction :) What you're currently viewing is a blog about fashion in film and film in fashion- the ways in which the two connect and have connected over the years.

With this blog, I will publish all my favourite fashion findings from films I have watched, all the way from the first films screened on December 28th 1895 by the Lumiere Brothers until the present day. This blog is for everyone to indulge in- you might find this intriguing if you are just interested in fashion and not particularly film, and vice versa. I'll also be giving tips as to which highstreet shops/websites you can get the looks from!

I'm not yet sure about how often I will update, but so far it looks as if it will be every time I discover something (and trust me, with my unhealthy obsession with these two matters, it will be very often indeed).

Enjoy, and please leave me feedback- share your thoughts on my blog!

Love and plenty of Christian Loubutin Red Soles,
Emma x

ps. Some inspirational words for you all by Coco Chanel: "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
